interesting blog post (previewing a forthcoming epsr article) on the «political economy dilemma» of populist, eurosceptic right-wing parties. on socio-economic issues, their voters by and large hold more left-wing preferences. thus, once populist right-wing parties become part of a government coalition, they are likely to either alienate their electoral base or their coalition partner. party-internal strife and subsequent electoral punishment ensues. in the unlikely case that «alternative für deutschland» should ever replace the fdp as the christian democrat's junior coalition partner, this success would also be their end.
